CHALETS HAVE THE WOW FACTOR!! Posted 25th Jan 2010 by Comocat, Sydney, Australia

As soon as we turned the key into our chalet our jaws dropped at the most amazing view ... the backwall was completely made of glass, affording a spectacular view of the river, mountains and waterfalls.

In fact, even though extremely private, three sides of the chalet have a view, made possible from the cleverly designed windows, one up high so you can lie in bed and gaze at the top of a mountain.

But it's not just the view that sets this place apart ... everything in the chalet was firstclass ... very comfy kingsize bed, large flatscreen TV with Sky and DVD player, beautiful bathroom (shower over the bath) and well-equipped kitchenette. There are no cooking facilities in the chalet apart from the microwave, but the friendly guy at the checkin area said that we could use the large kitchen in the lodge itself (backpacker style accom). The staff also put a comfy rollaway bed in the room for our daughter, with no additional charge.

The weather during our three day stay was a real mixed bagged ... warm and sunny one minute, then freezing cold, torrential rain and howling winds the next, we were told this is common for Milford, so really appreciated the doubleglazing and undertile heating in the kitchen and bathroom, along with the heated towel rail. A lovely lady braved the rain each morning to change our towels, poor thing, but there was no other servicing of the room as such, not that we needed it.

Long term travellers will appreciate the spaciousness of the room and great storage for large suitcases, plus drawers and a small cupboard to hang clothes.

I wouldn't really recommend for families with inquisitive young children, as the deck doen't have a railing, and is a VERY short walk (plunge!) to the river, which was really raging while we were there.

We enjoyed a hearty meal and a game of pool at the pub down the road, cheap and cheerfull, but full of travellers in good cheer.

This was one of the places that we would love to go back to if ever again in New Zealand ... do yourself a favour and stay two or three days here instead of doing the tiring daytrip from Te Anau or Queenstown to see Milford.

Relaxing and gorgeous, highly recommended !
