Milford Sound Lodge is now a Locator Beacon Hire Outlet

Through the Southland Locator Beacons Charity Trust the Milford Sound Lodge has been provided with Locator Beacons. These Beacons will be available for rent to everyone. Hire fees are $30 for up to 3 days, $40 for up to 7 days and $30 for any subsequent week. More information can be found on the website www.locatorbeacons.co.nz

Milford Sound Lodge has many trampers, hunters, boaters and climbers staying overnight throughout the whole year. Besides this, Milford Sound is home to approximately 300 locals over the summer period. Located only 16km from Milford Sound is the Homer Hut, an NZAC Hut housing many climbers and mountaineers throughout the year. Due to very changeable weather it is not always known when parties will set off into the mountains. Once the weather starts to clear and people want to set off, Te Anau – previously the nearest beacon hire outlet - is a long way to go to hire a beacon. Instead, many people set off without any form of ‘security’ and in case of an emergency risk being found only after days or weeks.

As the snow starts to melt more people are venturing into the hills and mountains of the Fiordland National Park. Milford Sound Lodge is proud to announce that we are able to offer beacons for hire to those that would like to ‘play safe’ when moving into remote areas. There is no cell phone coverage in Fiordland and the nearest road access can be a long way away. Taking a locator beacon is an essential item to carry along to call for help in case of an emergency.

Wireless Internet Now Available

Now you can stay connected while taking time out in Milford Sound. Milford Sound Lodge is very excited to be able to offer their guests high speed wireless internet with 100% coverage of our site.

The cost for this internet, which is provided by satellite as regular broadband is unavailable in Milford Sound, ranges from $3 for 10 mb to $50 for 250mb and your own personal access code is available from reception.
